Seize the Day – Growth and Ownership Mindsets (2 Days)

Overview

"I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul" – Invictus, William Ernest Henley

In 1888, William Ernest Henley penned those immortal words in his masterpiece, Invictus. The powerful poem has since inspired countless world leaders and businesspeople to achieve personal mastery, as well as to take ownership and accountability over the results in their lives.

Indeed, studies show that an Ownership and Growth Mindset oriented team consistently outperforms competitors, is more innovative and is far more resilient during times of crisis.

When your leadership team develops the ability to choose their responses to adverse situations, and become hungry for growth, they become obsessed with the words, "Learn, Learn, Learn!"

Instead of blaming others or trying to control external circumstances, perhaps it’s time for us to understand ourselves a bit better, envision meaningful short- and long-term goals within the organization, and to develop the correct mindsets so we can take action and start adding even more value into the lives of our customers, stakeholders, and colleagues!

Learning Outline
MODULE 1: Developing SMART Goals and How the Organization can Help Them
  • Participants learn to establish short and long-term goals for themselves, and to understand how their goals are compatible with the vision and mission of the company
  • "Josie's Lemonade Stall" Game: In this exciting and intense game, participants learn that we are each primarily driven by different motivations: Achievement, Recognition, Acceptance and Security. Instead of being pushed towards what society expects of them, participants will finally be able to define what success means to each of them individually
  • "Addiction vs Passion": Why do many people feel nothing at all when it comes to life and their goals? It’s vital for each of us to understand and find our passion, but how? To do this, we conduct a deep dive with participants to understand to role of dopamine as a driving factor in our lives, and how to find their life’s work and passion
  • "Lobster Story": An interactive story guaranteed to help participants understand the importance of taking initiative and defining their goals with absolute clarity (SMART Goals)
  • "Times Magazine Cover" Game: Participants must imagine that they’ve made it onto the cover page of the world’s most prestigious magazine! But, what achievements did they accomplish to deserve the honour? What was their key to success? What quotes or words of advice can they give to others who aspire to be like them? All these must be visualized by the team and included on a large mock magazine cover.
  • Teams will have to dig deep and discover their dreams, the values, skills and character attributes they need to get there. This is a powerful exercise in visualization, and as any successful person can tell you: If you can see it in your mind, you can definitely hold it in your hand!
MODULE 2: Taking Feedback Positively and Taking Stock of Where We Are
  • Thank You for the Feedback: After we have established goals for ourselves, the next step in developing an ownership and accountability mindset is for us to embrace feedback. Instead of taking feedback or complaints personally, we learn to reframe our perspectives of people and situations into opportunities for us to improve and accumulate value
  • "Egg Reflection" Game: This game serves as a timely reminder that we are in charge of the results in our lives and that personal mastery, ownership and accountability is the first step towards being a contributing leader
MODULE 3: Emotional Intelligence, Awareness, and Self-Management
  • The 5 Components of Emotional Intelligence in the workplace: An introduction to the critical topics of understanding ourselves, self-love / self-regulation, motivation and persuasion, empathy and active listening, as well as social skills

  • Understand why personal mastery and accountability is the key to building deeper and positive relationships with our colleagues, and how it will ultimately help us become more influential and confident leaders
  • "Pimple Story": A deeper examination at the purpose of stress and negative emotions in our lives, and to manage expectations and set healthy boundaries for ourselves
MODULE 4: Motivation, Developing Growth and Ownership Mindsets
  • Fixed vs Growth Mindsets: Why do some people love feedback, while others fear it so much? Why are some people so afraid to show their mistakes and failures, whilst others are so eager to fix them by seeking the proper guidance? We conduct a deep dive to help participants overcome their fixed mindsets and to move towards a culture of "learn, learn, learn"!
  • Participants learn to challenge the belief that we only have a limited capacity and pre-set amount of ability and talent
  • Participants learn that they can grow from failures and that perseverance and hard work lead to success
  • Positive Reinforcement - By far, the most powerful and direct way to foster a growth mindset for ourselves and those we lead is by praising properly. The language we use when encouraging ourselves has been identified as the leading reason why some people develop fixed mindsets whilst others thrive and grow in stressful, adverse and even uncertain environments. We take a deep dive to understand and see whether the words we are saying to ourselves is helpful, or secretly harmful
  • "Don't Steal My Fries" Activity: Challenging the belief that resources are scarce and that we have to cling onto individualism and learning that collaboration, giving and sharing will lead to greater gains for everyone
MODULE 5: The Role of Resourcefulness and the Best Ways to Develop It
  • What research and data says about the connection between resourcefulness and success
  • Modelling and Repetition: The best ways for us to develop resourcefulness is by conducting case studies on those who have succeeded under adverse and unconducive environments, repeat their triumphs, and to learn from their mistakes
  • Participants learn the answer to the age-old question - Is it more important to be detail orientated, or resourceful?
  • Participants learn to linking their beliefs and the merits of their work to resourcefulness
  • What does "Thinking Out of the Box" actually mean, and how to achieve it!
  • "Cup Transfer" Game: Teams are assigned five cups in a basin. There is a ping-pong ball in the first cup. The objective– to transfer the ball from the first cup to the fifth cup without touching the ball. The teams will then be provided with water, rocks, scissors and countless other tools. Most teams will attempt to float the ball out of the cups but they’ll realize that they don’t have enough water and their solution is not sustainable!
  • Instead, teams will have to think critically and innovate to use all available resources and tools! By the end, participants will realize that there are truly infinite ways to solve a problem, and that we are only limited by our mindsets and willingness to collaborate and innovate.
MODULE 6: Procrastination and Distraction - The Banes of Success
