Psychological First Aid in the Workplace

Overview

Psychological First Aid (PFA) is an approach that provides immediate emotional and practical support to individuals experiencing distress, trauma, or crisis. It aims to promote resilience, reduce distress, and facilitate coping. When crisis happens in the workplace, PFA is important to provide emotional and mental support for those affected so that they can bounce back from adversity.

Learning Objective

This program will provide an overview of Psychological First Aid (PFA) using the ALGEE framework in order for it to be utilized in the workplace.

Learning Outcomes

Able to differentiate between Psychological First Aid (PFA) and professional mental health services.

Able to define and explain the ALGEE framework.

Able to demonstrate skill sets in each stage of the ALGEE framework.

Able to identify the challenges in administering Psychological First Aid (PFA).

Methodology

Using a combination of short lecture sessions, small group discussion, quizzes, video clips and demonstrations.

Module 1: Introduction to Psychological First Aid (PFA)

  • Welcome and overview of Psychological First Aid (PFA).
  • The ALGEE approach and its importance as a framework in Psychological First Aid (PFA).

Module 2: A - Assess Risk

  • How to assess risk of suicide and harm?
  • How to approach someone in distress?
  • Video demonstration of the right way to assess risk and approach someone in distress.

Module 3: L - Listen Nonjudgmentally

  • What are active listening skills?
  • How to communicate without judgment?
  • Case studies on the right way to actively listen and communicate without judgment

Module 4: Give Support and Information

  • How to provide reassurance and hope?
  • Discussion on available resources for support and information.
  • Discussion on challenges in providing support and information during crisis

Module 5: Encourage Professional Help and Self-Help

  • When is it important to seek professional assistance?
  • How to encourage others to seek help?
  • Discussion on self-help strategies and community support.
