Designing and Delivering Convincing Presentations Like a UK Barrister

Overview

Is it true that people lose interest in what we have to say within seven seconds? One thing’s for sure, the way we deliver our presentations and present our ideas is becoming increasingly vital.

As a presenter, we can struggle to connect with and influence our intended audience. In the modern workplace, we often find ourselves fighting to gain the shortening attention of our audience amidst a sea of distracting apps and social media platforms.

Nothing is more daunting than asking your audience questions or for feedback, then being rewarded with silence from a cold room of participants, especially if they are the senior management, stakeholders, or shareholders of the company!

One thing is for certain - in an age where distractions are just a window away, we have to master the skills of building rapport, re-design our materials and the way we communicate with our audience if we want to deliver meaningful and impactful presentations to win our audience over!

Learning Objectives

This workshop seeks to inculcate into participants through interactive learning, re-writing exercises, and role-playing the skills of designing and delivering convincing presentations, like a UK Barrister! • Why audience centric thinking (design thinking) is so impactful and effective
  • Getting clear on our own objectives and outcomes - Why we often fail at influencing or convincing other people when our own objectives and outcomes are fuzzy
  • Understand how interests and needs drive behaviours and decision making, more so than logic and rational thinking
  • The importance of starting with our "Whys" when presenting to others
  • Role-Play exercises: putting participants in realistic training scenarios to master and utilize the techniques learnt, in a step-by-step and systematic approach
Module 2: Tailored Approach in Planning a Convincing Presentation
  • Choosing a topic which is tailored to your intended audience. We take a structured approach in determining:
    • Timing for each segment of the presentation
    • Technology to be used (virtual polls and engagement tools)
    • Audience engagement (questions to the audience)
    • Best styles of communication with the intended audience
Module 3: Tailored Approach in Designing Presentation Materials and Storytelling
  • Meticulously tailor and design convincing and uplifting presentation materials, optimized for both offline and online presentations, including wise use of attractive content, examples, stories, scenarios and images suited for your audience and objectives
  • Starting with "WHY" – why it is vital to start every presentation by instantly connecting with the emotions of our audience, instead of explaining the "WHAT"s or the "HOW"s
  • Designing an optimal sequence and flow of the presentation
  • Marrying the merits of our arguments / ideas to the needs and interests of the audience
  • The vital role of storytelling in presentations and relating complex concepts with strategic use of metaphors and analogies
  • Role-Play exercises: putting participants in different hypothetical presentations to master and utilize the techniques learnt, in a step-by-step and systematic approach (catered for your organization)
Module 4: Building Rapport with Your Audience and Confidence
  • In many cultures around the world, presenters apologize unnecessarily to appear empathetic or because we think it is easier to get the buy-in of our audience – in truth, these unnecessary apologies greatly hurt our chances of building rapport and delivering a successful presentation. Instead of setting a negative tone for the rest of the presentation, there are far better and empowering ways to deliver!
  • Perform public speaking comfortably to a large audience and presenting to higher management. Go into every presentation full of confidence, energy and good will
  • How to make your audience like you instantly, through the power of sincere and honest appreciation, remembering names and body language
  • The role of active listening and encouraging the audience to ask questions
  • Role-Play exercises: putting participants in realistic training scenarios to master and utilize the techniques learnt, in a step-by-step and systematic approach, especially in terms of projecting good body language and confidence
Module 5: Delivering a Convincing Presentation with Impact
  • Convincingly “pitch and sell” new products, ideas or strategies to internal and external stakeholders
  • Participants will learn how to deliver a presentation with passion, warmth, eloquence, correct tone, tempo and energy, just like a UK Barrister, being a clear and effective communicator and masterful use of voice
  • Reduce colloquial language (lah, leh, lor), filler language (uh, uhm, err…) and usage of fake accents
  • Uplifting the audience and answering tough questions in a convincing manner
  • Understand the biggest needs of adult audiences, and how to cater to those needs by mastering the “Ratio”, allowing audience members to engage in and progressively contribute to the presentation
  • Role-Play exercises: putting participants in realistic training scenarios to master and utilize the techniques learnt, in a step-by-step and systematic approach
Module 6: Answering Tough Questions Convincingly
  • Recognize and transform potential objections, as well as addressing tough queries from the audience in a concise and confident manner
  • Fundamentals of winning people over to your way of thinking and getting the buy in of your audience by approaching questions by first emphasizing the common goals
  • What to do if you disagree with the questioner, or if you don’t know the answer
Module 7: Putting It All Together: Practical Delivery Exercises
  • Role-Play exercises: participants will practice and master the knowledge and skills learnt, by to designing and delivering mock presentations catered to your organization’s needs. Some examples may include:
    • Convincing and Consultative Sales Presentations

What makes our point of view significant or unique?

With a digital platform in place, we obtain data and analytics that helps clients to justify their learning cost and ROI

Thought leadership

We believe that the success of a programme is measured by its sustainability, which is displayed when participants can take what they learn and apply at the workplace. By incorporating gamification into our programmes, the engagement with participants begin even before the actual assembly of participants. We are able to see how the message hits the participants with greater impact compared to conventional training methods. The self-realisation that is evoked in participants minds allow them to carry what they learn into their own workplace. We do not want our programmes to be ‘flash in the pan’ or ‘touch and go’ for participants. Hence, our belief is to create initiatives and activities that results in effectiveness and sustainability following the efforts put in by all parties involved.

How we intend to build our efforts in the future

To build more off-the-shelf learning programmes so that we can quickly turn around when clients come to us for urgent

To expand our pool of trainers around Asia Pacific, who can deliver in different languages other than English

How are we disrupting the hr industry

Team building and many more physical classroom learning have been proven to be most effective with gamification, which drives people’s behaviours way before the physical session.
