Connecting for Excellence in Telecommunications Retail Sales

Help your retail team turn better customer conversations into more suitable plan and device recommendations.

Customers may walk into a telecommunications outlet asking for a phone or a package, but choosing the right option takes more than listing features. They need to understand what fits their usage, budget and preferences—and what they will pay and commit to.

This one-day practical programme helps retail employees welcome different customers, uncover what they need, explain plans and devices clearly, and guide them towards an informed decision.

What participants will learn

By the end of the programme, participants will be able to:

  • Adapt their welcome to different customer communication preferences.
  • Ask useful questions about phone usage, device needs, service concerns and budget.
  • Compare suitable plans and devices in language customers can understand.
  • Explain charges, promotions and contract conditions clearly.
  • Recommend relevant upgrades and complementary products based on customer needs.
  • Respond to concerns with empathy and guide customers towards a decision without pressure.

Why this matters for your organisation

When customers understand their options, retail teams are better placed to recommend plans and devices that suit them. The programme is designed to strengthen service and sales consistency across employees and outlets, support relevant upgrades and complementary purchases, and reduce misunderstandings about charges, package conditions and device capabilities.

What the one-day programme covers

1. Start every connection with a personal welcome

Participants explore their own communication style and practise adapting their first 30 seconds with different customers. They use the DOPE assessment and HELLO + 3A approach to create a welcome that feels warm, clear and relevant.

Practice activity: Deliver and refine opening conversations for four different customer situations.

2. Discover how customers use their phones

Before suggesting a plan or device, participants learn to uncover what the customer actually needs. They practise listening, clarifying key phrases and asking selected SPIN questions about usage, frustrations, priorities and affordability.

Practice activity: Use customer profiles to identify the three most important needs, then shortlist suitable plans and devices.

3. Make plans and devices easy to compare

Participants practise turning technical features into everyday benefits. They compare packages and devices, explain costs and conditions, and recommend upgrades or complementary purchases only when these fit the customer’s needs.

Practice activity: Present two suitable plan and phone options and explain their differences in plain language.

4. Help customers feel understood and confident to decide

Participants learn to clarify the reason behind a customer’s hesitation, respond using Feel, Felt and Found, and support their explanation with accurate information. They then practise closing the conversation by confirming the chosen option, charges, key conditions and next steps.

Practice activity: Handle realistic objections, receive feedback and repeat the conversation.

Practical learning throughout the day

The programme combines 30% theory with 70% interactive learning. Participants work through discussions, customer scenarios, simulations and group activities, with opportunities to practise the conversations they will have in a retail outlet.

They leave with practical tools, including opening scripts, a needs checklist, a plan and device comparison guide, objection responses and a seven-day workplace application plan.
